A power cage is one of the single most important pieces of kit that anyone who is serious about training at home should have in their gym.
Sometimes known as a squat rack, a power rack or power cage, it allows you to train at home, alone, but still be safe.
You can use the rack to squat and the safety pins allow you to go heavier than you would otherwise as you’re protected inside the cage, however you can also complete other major lifts, including bench press and rows and many come with attachments allowing you to complete exercises like the Lat pulldown or cable flyes for further full body development.
Of course, you can also use the frame to complete bodyweight moves such as pull-ups or dips and that is the brilliance of the power cage. This single piece of equipment offers a unique home gym experience, giving you the perfect opportunity to build and improve your fitness and physique without ever having to leave the house again.
In this review, we are going to look at some of the best cages on the market and identify which one we think you need to have in your home.
1. Fitness Reality 810XLT Super Max Power Cage
The Fitness Reality 810 power cage is a great place to start. With a Lat Pull-down attachment available this cage gives you everything you could want in a power cage, and more.
The heavy-duty frame is made from 2-inch thick tubular steel and has a weight capacity of 800lbs meaning you can go heavy on your squats or when benching and you won’t ever have to worry about your safety.
The cage also comes with two dual mounted, chrome safety bars, which can lock in place, giving you a safety net when you lift and both bars support up to 800lbs.
The cage has a large walk-in space, allowing for easier and more comfortable movement and the adjustable height levels or multi-grip pull up bars also make for more comfortable use in a range of different positions and for users of different heights.
The extra space enables you to fit in a bench or footrest to support your exercises and the high tensile strength, nylon coated cable, allows for a smoother, easy-glide movement as you use the high lat or low row pulley system. This cage also comes with an adjustable, foam covered leg hold-down feature which can be moved for your optimal position and comfort, meaning you’re more secure when using the Lat Pull-down feature.
This cage allows you to do almost every exercise you could think of and allows you to work on your fitness with a range of different exercises including squats, curls, shrugs, pull-ups, presses, rows and body weight exercises too.
With additional extras such as dip bars, landmine presses, and j-hooks you can further expand on the exercises you can do and once you purchase a bench you can start to develop your body even more.
What We Liked
Our favorite feature was the high weight capacity.
Too many cages only allow for a small amount of weight and too many people, unfortunately, opt for these. The Fitness Reality 810power cage is perfect for all users from beginner to pro and ensures that once you have purchased this machine, the only time you will need to upgrade will be when you are ready to start challenging for world records. It functions perfectly as a squat rack, a power rack with a Lat Pull-down attachment or a power rack with a bench, allowing you to complete a range of different exercises.
What We Didn’t Like
The cage as a whole is fantastic. Strong, sturdy, nice design and some great attachments, but we would really love to see an option to buy them all together.
Unfortunately, after you purchase this you also need to get some weights, a bench and if you want additional attachments like the landmine press, that too. We just wish it was all included and you could buy them all at once.
2. HulkFit 1000-Pound Capacity Adjustable Power Cage
With a name like Hulkfit, you are going to expect a big strong piece of kit, and that’s exactly what you get with the HulkFit multi-function power cage.
The cage only option has a 1000lb weight limit meaning unless you are actually competing at an elite, world-record beating level, every user will be satisfied with this cage.
The heavy-duty steel frame has an H-shape design for maximum stability and the steel safety bars and J-Hooks offer extra support and convenience when lifting or solely using as a squat rack.
The multi-grip pull up bars and the dip bars with safety locks that the HulkFit cage comes with also offer an extra level of exercise opportunity however this cage can do so much more.
With the ability to add a cable crossover machine and a Lat Pull-down attachment you can start to build a workout station that is more advanced than you will find in most gyms.
The cable crossover machine is wide open, meaning it won’t get in your way when using the cage, even if you are using a 7-ft barbell and the 2” diameter weight posts allow you to store multiple weight plates at once.
The nylon coated cables are aircraft quality and have also been tested with weights up to 1000lbs.
The Olympic Lat Pull-down and low row attachment give you an option to add another dimension to your training and ensure you can build the ultimate physique all with this cage and if you want to use this power rack with a bench you can add even more exercises to your list.
The actual space of the cage can vary depending on which attachments you decide on but the cage on its own is only 44”x47” whilst standing 8.1” high and it has ample room inside allowing you to store your bench or simply move freely when using the cage.
If you’re looking for a multi-purpose power cage, that can offer the full body gym training experience, then this is the one for you.
What We Liked About It
Undoubtedly the ability to attach a cable crossover to this machine is the biggest draw.
The only thing truly missing would be an option to train legs but as you can squat, lunge and pretty much everything else with this cage, a leg extension machine won’t offer that much of a benefit.
What we didn’t like about it
It’s hard to find any drawbacks as the HulkFit power cage is a great piece of kit but, if we had to pick one, it would be the inability to add a landmine press to the power cage, but in all honesty, that would only be a minor gripe as all in all this is a great piece of equipment.
3. Marcy Home Gym Cage System
The Marcy home gym cage is a strong and durable home gym system that is perfect for weightlifting and working on your physique. It’s built to last, withstanding intense use and with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, you can expect to keep this machine for a long time.
The all in one design allows you to work your lower body and upper body without having to go to a gym and by using this power rack with a bench you can begin to add more exercises to your routine.
The spacious open cage design also allows you to store your bench or other equipment in the middle, saving space, which is a key feature and as one of the biggest problems with home gyms is often the lack of space, it’s good to see that the Marcy home gym cage system has put in some features to help with this, including a range of racks where you can store other workout equipment such as weight plates, dumbbells or kettlebells, all in easy to reach range or your dumbbells or barbells without having to move to other machines.
Equipped with a high and low pulley system, you will be able to complete a range of full-body toning exercises such as ab crunches, Lat Pull-down, Hip abduction and rowing exercises or work on your arms with tricep or bicep exercises.
This cage comes with dip attachments allowing you to take your physique to the next level with intense bodyweight training and also comes with built-in and multi-positional pull-up bars allowing for you to add another dimension to your training as you complete one of the best full-body exercises, the pull up.
What we liked
Often with cages that aren’t enclosed all the way around you can be left wondering about your safety as the squat clips aren’t very tall, but not with this Marcy cage, the open space design and build of the frame ensures you feel safe and secure at all times.
The design is well thought out and the space-saving features are perfect for anyone with a home gym that understands how hard it can be to store their equipment.
What we didn’t like
You can do different things with this cage, such as dips, pull-ups or holding weight on the bar before you squat or bench and whilst different aspects of this cage can hold different amounts, the main max user weight is set at 300lbs which is ok but not great.
For most people out there you won’t ever get towards 300lbs and so actually, it may be perfect, but we would like to see a slightly higher max user weight to avoid having to buy a new cage when you get to a high enough standard.
4. REP FITNESS PR-1100 Power Rack
The REP Fitness PR-1100 power rack at its core, is a power cage like many others, however, when looking at this cage you have the option to build it exactly how you like, from the color to the attachments that come with it, giving a whole new dimension to building your home gym.
The cage itself comes with an integrated multi-grip pull up bar, UHMW plastic-lined j cups to reduce noise and protect/hold the bar and full-length safety bars, keeping you safe, secure and stable as you lift heavy or without a spotter.
These racks are designed for home use, and at 80.5 inches, they are tall enough to cater to most users without being too big for a home gym space. It’s built from 14 gauge steel and comes with double rear stability bars for extra strength and support and when in use, can support a whopping 1000kg of weight.
Even the Lat Pull-down attachment (if you decide to have it) can accommodate up to 250lbs so you can easily add enough weight to make your workouts challenging.
If you’re going for the power rack with the lat pull-down attachment you will also be able to use the low row system meaning you can train a whole host of muscles with one amazing piece of kit.
If you’re interested in adding more to the cage you can also add a dip attachment and a weight storage system so that you can keep your weights and plates secure.
This cage is 44” wide x 45.5” deep, giving you plenty of space to move around and complete your workout and with numbered uprights, you can make adjustments to your placement easier and faster than on other cages.
Doing exactly what it is intended for, this cage would be a good addition to any home gym.
What we liked
The cage itself is solid, with a good build and strong features however we felt that being able to build your cage and even pick the color was one of the nicer features for a great piece of kit.
We also loved the very impressive weight limit.
We understand that everyone won’t be lifting those types of weights but it’s good for the more experienced lifter.
What we didn’t like
The cage itself is strong and although the ability to add more to your cage is a good idea we would like to see a few other features such as a cable crossover system or a landmine press attachment. If you’re truly going to build your home gym system, it would be great to have more options available.
5. HulkFit Multi-Function Adjustable Squat Stand
Another one from HulkFit, this squat stand, or sometimes as it is known, half power cage, is a heavy-duty, square steel frame, that is made with a H-shape base for maximum stability and can support up to 800 lbs.
Built for squatting, this rack comes with two spotter arms that lock firmly in place to keep you safe when you squat and two different diameter pull-up bars for use when you’re ready to work your upper body.
The heavy-duty j-hooks will support the weight you lay across the bar and the weight plate holders are designed for convenience and enhanced stability as you store your bumper plates when you’re not using them.
It stands 81” high and has a width of 44” making it a perfect fit for any home gym and as the cage only weighs 110lbs it won’t be too difficult to set up and store in your home gym.
The triangle lock system and rubber feet ensure the rack is stable and secure when in use and the adjustable holes ensure users of all heights can find their comfortable squat setting.
This rack doesn’t come with any other attachments or any additional features but you will be able to use it for other presses, rows and pulls if you adjust the bars accordingly.
Overall, if you’re looking for a heavy-duty frame that can be used for improving your squats and overall strength, this could be the machine for you.
What we liked
The increased stability features of this rack were definitely a positive and something we really appreciated. Often with squat racks or half racks, their stability can be a worry but the HulkFit model does not disappoint. From the frame to the support arms, you always feel safe when using this rack.
What we didn’t like
If you decide to pick a different color model, black or red, the rack becomes much more basic and the weight limit drastically drops. We would like to see a cage that can be built to your own tastes and that doesn’t suffer in quality by simply changing the color of the rack.
One of the best pieces of equipment you can buy for your home gym and possibly the best way to spend your money, a power cage is a fantastic piece of kit.
Whether you’re looking for a home gym squat rack a power rack with lat pull-down attachment or just a power rack with a bench, the options above won’t let you down.
Each and every one can satisfy your needs in a different way and has the capabilities to meet even the most advanced fitness enthusiast’s needs.
With high weight limits and a range of attachments, a power cage is one of the best investments you could ever make and is possibly the only piece of equipment that deserves a place in every home gym.
Now you have the options, the only thing left to do is pick the right cage for you.
